The power of pool tiles to create an aesthetic and set the mood of your backyard oasis should never be underestimated. Although a seemingly small feature, this aspect of design plays a significant role in the overall look. Whether you want a vibrant tropical paradise or an area of serene ambiance, choosing the right tile colour, shape and finish can transform your pool into a stunning centrepiece. Here, Melbourne Pool + Outdoor Design’s Jessica Muller dives into the world of pool tile colours and styles with Trent James, the owner of TJ Pool Plumbing, to explore how different shades can impact water clarity, the perception of your pool size and depth, the overall aesthetic and the surrounding environment.
“Most people who want a bright blue pool like the colour of water surrounding a tropical island choose a turquoise blue tile, when in fact a white pool tile gives you crisp blue water,” James explains. With more than 20 years of experience in the concrete pool industry, James has a wealth of knowledge to dispel common myths and guide you through the process of selecting the perfect pool tiles that not only complement your outdoor space, but also reflect your personal style. His company, TJ Pool Plumbing specialises in high-end fully tiled concrete pools, with an unwavering commitment to pushing the boundaries of pool construction.
THE ART OF SELECTION
With a vast array of options available when it comes to pool tile colours, patterns and shapes, it can feel overwhelming making such an important decision. When considering your options, there are a few things you should factor into your decision. Natural light can significantly influence how colours appear; the intensity of sunlight can make colours appear brighter or more subdued, so it’s important to view colour samples in the light conditions of your pool area. The size and depth of your pool can also impact how the colour is perceived and vice versa, with dark colours making pools appear smaller and light colours creating an illusion of space. The finish of the tile is also important, with glossy tiles reflecting more light and making your pool look brighter, while matte tiles will create a more subtle, muted look.
Generally, homeowners will have done some of their own research before meeting with a pool designer. “Most customers have some idea of what colour pool tile they want with inspiration from our complete jobs,” James says. “To help them with their final decision we head into the pool tile company show room where you can look, touch and feel the tiles on display and see many fully tiled examples in different environments and in the
selected colour.” So, if you’re feeling unsure or overwhelmed by the choices ahead of you, rest assured you won’t be facing the process alone.
SETTING THE VIBE
The colour, shape, texture and pattern of your pool tiles can significantly impact the ambiance of your outdoor space. With the thoughtful and intentional selection of tiles, you can curate a specific mood or atmosphere, ensuring that your pool area truly reflects your intended use of the space. For instance, vibrant blue tiles can create a sense of calm and relaxation, while darker blues create a sense of sophistication and elegance, perfectly suited for evening gatherings or to craft a feeling of luxury.
TJ Pool Plumbing recently completed a gorgeous project at Hotel Sorrento, with a generously sized pool lined in opulent light green mosaic tiles. “Inspired by the surrounding olive trees, this choice of pool tiles added a touch of luxury,” James says. “The addition of creamy travertine stone pavers around the pool perfectly complemented both the pool tile and building’s limestone, creating a cohesive, contemporary Mediterranean aesthetic, boasting the Europe summer vibes.”
AUGMENT THE SURROUNDS
When choosing your tiles, you should also consider how they will complement the tones of your home, landscape and other surrounding features. Thinking of your tile selection as a part of the entire pool design will ensure that everything works well together to create a cohesive look. If your pool is surrounded by lush greenery, find a tile style that will blend in, complement or contrast with it. Also consider how your tiles will work alongside your outdoor décor and what aspects you wish to highlight.
The ability to customise its designs means that TPEC Pool Enclosures are able to work with tricky
pools. “It’s sad when we speak with a customer that has invested so much in the pool build and is super enthusiastic about an enclosure, but it’s not possible to install a pool enclosure because of poor pool design or non-practical features,” he shares. For this reason, simple pool design is a great idea to ensure your options remain open in the future, even if you can’t justify a pool enclosure at the start. “Luckily we have an amazing customisation capability, so we are able to help in most circumstances,” Tame reassures.
TIPS FOR HOMEOWNERS
“The last thing you want is a pool that is very costly to install, only to have a high maintenance, almost unusable pool in your yard,” Tame points out. He recommends investing in a pool enclosure, which will, in turn, invest in your health and lifestyle, your family’s enjoyment and the long-term usability of your pool. “It’ll be some of the best money you’ve ever spent,” he says.
If you’ve decided on a pool enclosure, “quality of materials and warranties are critical, so don’t cut corners or buy cheap copies, we’ve seen the result and it’s not a positive outcome for the customer, sometime resulting in us replacing it after only a short time.” Tame advises. “In the pool industry the quality products last a lifetime, even though they may seem costly at the outset. It’s an investment and it’s well worth it!”
In the simplest terms as put by Tame: “Go for it! You will never look back, and you will have a far more usable and positive pool experience over the long term.”
