Out From The Blue

The shape of this stunning Camberwell pool was inspired by the need to retain two existing trees in the rear garden that were protected under council regulations. This resulted in a unique and interesting shape that does not compromise the natural surroundings.

Within the pool, stunning Bisazza glass-mosaic tiles have been applied as a feature across the rear wall, which is the most visible from the surrounding garden. Ceramic tiles have been used to line the remainder of the pool’s interior, which provide a beautiful contrast and cost-effective finishing solution.

The contemporary curve of this pool design has transferred to the rest of the garden area and helped to separate the pool deck, garden beds, alfresco roof and barbecue benchtop mirror. The frameless glass fencing also incorporates custom-made curved sections that are fixed to the side of the floating insitu concrete pool deck.

Elegant planting separates the contemporary alfresco dining space from the raised pool terrace and soothing water trickles down a rough-textured, black granite water-wall at the rear of the pool. This striking water feature lights up at night and acts as a screen wall to cover the pool equipment beyond; helping to maximise the amount of space in a small garden.

The alfresco includes insitu concrete paving and a curved roof structure with down-lighting for evening dining. For entertaining guests, the design combines a cantilevered benchtop with built-in timber cabinetry and a stainless steel sink, barbecue and fridge.

Although some challenges were encountered, including tight access to the pool location, the team at Out From The Blue overcame the hurdle by temporarily removing the door and window of the laundry, allowing equipment to move easily through. To deal with the complexity of soil removal, a mini-bobcat and 1.5 tonne excavator were used to dig the soil, which was then removed to the front of the property via a conveyor belt.

Out From The Blue was established in 1995 by Gary Kilworth, who had a vision to seamlessly integrate contemporary landscape design with high-quality construction of concrete swimming pools.

Based in Melbourne, Out From The Blue has grown to comprise a team of landscape architects and in-house pool builders who work closely on each project to create highly individual, imaginative and exciting landscape outcomes.

The level of detailing in this project and the integration between house and pool showcases Out From The Blue’s ability to design and construct highly complex and innovative swimming pools and landscapes. This is why Out From The Blue has received more than 55 awards from the Swimming Pool and Spa Association of Australia (SPASA) since 1995. This includes the project featured here, which won gold at the 2015 SPASA Victoria and the 2015 SPASA National Awards of Excellence in the Best Concrete Swimming Pool Under $100,000 category.
