INNER-CITY SANCTUARY

This Thornbury backyard transformation fuses intentional design with natural beauty to craft a private, calming sanctuary. The standout features are the large windows and glass pool fencing – establishing a visual connection between the indoor living area and the outdoor deck and pool. The Monument-coloured fencing combined with warm timber tones creates eye-catching contrast, while soft curves define the garden beds and pool, embodying harmony and movement.

Native plantings, a dog-friendly lawn and year-round entertaining zones offer both functionality and serenity. The deck is established as the primary hub through a built-in barbeque and raised herb garden opposite the open-plan kitchen. The north-facing orientation was key, allowing abundant natural light to elevate the space.

Organic curves, crazy paving and sandstone finishes evoke a sense of relaxed sophistication, while recycled bricks, Corten steel, Tallowwood decking and honeycomb granite offer warmth and texture. Sustainable touches complete the space, including Macrocarpa sleepers, native species and edible plants, creating a backyard that is not only highly functional, but warm, welcoming and connected to nature.
