In 1953, a seam of unique granitic sandstone was found in central Victoria by the Maltby family. For more than 50 years, the quarry was owned and operated by the Maltby family before Yarrabee Slate purchased the business working from this location, Castlemaine Slate and Stone Quarry, which became the company known today as Yarrabee & Castlemaine Stone Solutions.
The stone’s natural lamination allows the rock to be split into sheets of varying thicknesses which can be used for a range of applications – from paving to walling. Recently, Yarrabee & Castlemaine Stone Solutions were responsible for supplying stone for the breathtaking RACV project shown in the photo. To this day, almost 70 years on from the quarry’s foundation, the splitting process is still done by hand to produce exceptional results and excellent job opportunities for the region.
